      News and Reports

      Secretary's Report - June 2020

The 2019/2020 FDTA executive and staff reps met for the final time on June 9th.

This was another digital meeting. Many future events - including the September 18th Pro D day, the October PSA day, and some number of future FDTA meetings - are likely to be zoom events. The executive discussed pros and cons of general zoom use in the short and long term. Occasional digital meetings (or hybrids) may continue after COVID.

The president reported on a number of topics including accommodations for members concerned about COVID 19 exposure, the state of assessment and reporting during the pandemic, and the possibility of a worsening teacher shortage in the district. He discussed the formation of the COVID committee at the provincial level bringing together multiple stakeholders including the BCTF but stressed the picture for the fall was still very unclear.

Staff reps reported positive attitudes at many schools after a week of having a larger number of students present. Safety concerns related to new H&S protocols were raised and addressed by the Health and Safety Chair. The secretary's opinion is that she's doing an amazing job.

The delegates who had attended the online AGM spoke to their experiences. Their time and efforts are appreciated! Their report is on file at the FDTA office.

The position of bargaining chair is still unfilled after the May AGM. If inspiration strikes, please contact the FDTA office to nominate an member to fill the chair.

      BCTF News

The latest from BCTF President Teri Mooring:

Earlier today, the BC government announced its plan to move to “Stage 2” in its COVID-19 response plan and fully reopen schools on September 8. You can find all of the details of the government’s announcement External link opens in new tab or windowhere. You can also read the BCTF’s news release External link opens in new tab or windowhere. In short, as BCTF President I'm concerned that the plan is too much too soon, and that there is a lot more work to do. We know you will all have many questions and concerns. We share those worries and are taking action to make sure government hears them and makes changes.

      Collective Agreement

      Your Agreement with SD5

      Collective Agreement 2.3MB

This is the local and provincial matters agreement. It contains common articles bargained between the BCTF and BCPSEA and local articles bargained between the FDTA/CDTA and the SD5 Board of Education. It also contains a number of “letters of understanding”, indicating agreement between the union and employer as to how the articles should be interpreted.

If you believe that the CA is being violated in any way please contact your staff rep or the FDTA office.

(NB: This is the previous CA, which was effective through June 2019. A new agreement was bargained through March of 2020 and the BCTF and FDTA voted to ratify the provincial and local portions respectively in April of 2020. The new document will be posted here as soon as possible.)

      Self Directed Pro D

If you intend to complete a self directed professional development activity in the near future please review the documents below and submit the paperwork to your school's Pro D rep/organizer.
